Holmfirth lies in the centre of the Holme Valley in West Yorkshire. The town and its neighbouring villages are picturesque and charming, surrounded by dramatic Pennine landscapes. It's a beautiful place to spend a few days, especially in the summer when a series of festivals brings the town alive with music, art and fun.
Built of Yorkshire stone and flags, Holmfirth's narrow lanes and hidden-away corners are a delight to explore, revealing a wealth of one-of-a-kind craft and gift shops alongside traditional butchers, bakers and delicatessens. Locally made treats like Longley's ice cream and wine from Holmfirth's own vineyard are available in cafes and tea shops that you may recognise from the BBC's long-running Last of the Summer Wine, which was filmed here. Many of these local businesses are festival sponsors - please support them, they are vital to the festival's continued success.
There are lovely spots to discover throughout the valley, and many festival events will tempt you out of the town to explore nearby Hepworth, Upperthong or Holme Styes. At the end of a busy day, Holmfirth is well supplied with restaurants and atmospheric riverside pubs to relax in, and a selection of good quality accommodation.
A note about the terrain
The Holme Valley is quite hilly! This means that most walks outside the town involve fairly steep climbs and some streets in Holmfirth have a bit of a slope to them, or even flights of steps. There are also some cobbled bits and some narrow lanes. This makes for really great views and fab photos, but if you use a wheelchair, or a pushchair or if you have any concerns about getting about, it may be a good idea to ring the venue ahead of time, or email us at info@holmfirthartsfestival.co.uk and talk through your requirements. We'll do what we can to help you enjoy the events you want to go to.
